AU setting where Erik learned of Shaw's goals and killed him a decade earlier and he, with some assistance by Shaw's former people carries on Shaw's goals, but in a slower, more diplomatic/conniving way thanks to the advice of one Emma Frost. Together he and Emma establish the country of Genosha within the a decade, which quickly becomes a major player politically and a safe haven for mutants. Everyone is almost perfect, except that Erik has never found his submissive, leaving him increasingly disconnected from his emotions and making many question his leadership, as it's nearly impossible to make it to thirty without finding your sub.

Emma invites the famed sub Raven to come to court under the hopes that she might belong to Erik, and if not then that she might at least serve as a distraction for some time. Raven agrees, but only if her very human and dominant brother can come with her. Emma allows this, as it's good publicity for Genosha and this Charles Xavier is known to be the foremost expert on genetics, so he could prove useful. Raven and Charles arrive at court, where Erik's right hand man/woman Azazel/Destiny immediately recognize that Raven is their sub and claims her before Erik can even give a courtly introduction. So much for that plan. But Erik does feel an immediate connection to Charles and they quickly become reluctant friends, as Erik despises humans and Charles seems to want to avoid Erik at all costs.

Emma notices there is something... off about Charles as compared to other doms, and one day she finally manages to break through his mental blocks that she assumed Raven had taught him. But the moment she slips into Charles' head she knows that he is neither human nor a dominant, and the moment she manages to get him to fight back and drop his shields as a result, Erik knows that his sub has been with him for weeks. Charles faked being both, the former to give proof that human and mutants could coexist peacefully and the latter to avoid this very situation.

Charles tries to resist Erik, but now that it's out in the open and Erik is treating him like his sub rather than a fellow dom, Charles is horrified to find that his instincts are beginning to override his reason and that he's actually acting like a sub for the first time in his life Erik meanwhile, is doing his best to train Charles and learn how to be a proper dom to a rather unusual sub, having never had anyone attempt to say no to him in a decade. Happy ending please?

Of course, calling Tony for help presents its own issues, not the least of which being that Charles is sure any call he made would be tracked, especially given his new circumstances. There’s one other way to contact Tony though, something Charles hasn’t attempted since he was fifteen and doesn’t know if he can even do anymore.

Charles mutters something about going to the bathroom, Erik neither questioning him nor making any move to follow like some of the more possessive doms might have, and he sighs in relief the moment the door’s shut. Charles closes his eyes and slides his fingers to his temple, grimacing as he forces his mind concentrate rather than simply let thoughts come and go freely.

Charles pushes his mind out, and finds that he can reach past the borders of Genosha with ease. There’s a certain strain in the back of his mind the closer he pushes toward New York, and Charles almost sighs in relief when he manages to single out Tony’s mind from all the others, the feel of it strangely familiar. Tony, don’t look for me, I’m still in Genosha. You’ve probably heard by now that I’ve gotten myself into a bit of trouble.

This is your definition of a “bit”? And if you’ve always been able to do this, I’m kind of pissed about the phone bill I’ve wracked up from calling you in Oxford, not gonna lie. Charles snorts in Tony’s head and feels the other man shudder from surprise rather than disgust, mind already racing at the ways in which Charles’ powers could be employed. All of it piques Charles’ interest, and if he isn’t able to get his shields up, he may let Tony test out his theories. But right now he has no time for them. Tony, as exciting as my mutation is, please try to concentrate on the issue at hand. What are they saying about me on the news? Is there any chance I could come home?

Absolutely none. Half the papers consider you a threat to national security. Hell, even the media that’s sympathetic to your cause isn’t too keen on kidnapping the King of Genosha’s sub, especially not when he’s a mutant. They’re trying to paint it as some sort of Beauty and the Beast bullshit, where you’re transforming him into a kinder, gentler sort of dictator..

Drama doesn’t suit you as well as it does me, Charles. Though I’ll give you that this level of fucking up is impressive, even by my standards. Charles might have been insulted if anyone else were being so flippant, but he’d seen though Tony’s act years ago and could see the anxiety underneath the humor, could feel it. And yes, Shield’s not going to lift a finger to help you. I’m not sure some of them aren’t relieved to see you go.

Splendid. Charles shudders, the strain in the back of his mind steadily growing. He’s never been sure what his limits were, how they might have changed since he was a child.

He certainly couldn’t reach across oceans then, but he also doesn’t remember it being this hard to keep the multitude of thoughts around him out of his head. Tony, I’m not sure how much longer I can stay connected to you, so we need to make a plan now. I’d escape by myself, but Erik ordered me not to put up any blocks or shields, and I haven’t figured out how to, to disobey with these instincts running through me yet.

Duly noted. The thing is, I’m not really sure I can help you without starting World War III. Charles mentally raises an eyebrow, because caution is usually his forte, not Tony’s, especially not about something like this. Not unless… Steve ordered you not to, didn’t he? But you’re a switch, it’s not as though you feel compelled to obey like a sub would-

Jesus, do you know nothing about dynamic biology? Don’t answer that, of course you don’t. When it comes to your true match, you feel a similar compulsion that subs do to obey, depending on the order. And there wasn’t an order anyway. No one can afford another war right now, Charles, and I’m not going to start one, even for you. And as upset as you are right now, you must realize how bad that would look for your campaign for peaceful coexistence. Unless, he hasn’t hurt you or tried to lock you up, has he? . Tony’s voice grows tight on his last few words, waves of anger rolling off of him.

Of course I don’t want a war, I just hoped you'd have a solution that didn’t result in one. And no, the strange thing is that he’s being… nice, even tender. He’s not trying to stop my work and his rules are only a bit terrible, and I have no idea when he’ll show his true colors. Charles sighs as he feels Tony’s relief, knowing his chance of being rescued was growing smaller by the second. Charles could tell that Tony wasn't lying about the war his rescue would likely cause, and he couldn't condone that, not even to save himself.

You know, there’s a chance he already has, but look, Steve and I are coming to Genosha on Shield business in a month and I can have a rescue plan that doesn’t end in carnage read if you still need it. Until then you’re just going to have to sit tight. Besides, I'm not sure that finding your dom might not be good for in the long run and Steve agrees-

Steve is from the nineteen forties, when they still puts subs on leashes and you're... you. Forgive me if I don’t consider the two the expert on normal relationships. You’re just lucky you both turned out to be switches.. Charles can feel Tony roll his eyes and the pulse in the back of his head grow a bit stronger, the feel of Erik slipping into his mind.

Don’t be a brat, Charles. You know Steve never approved of leashing and that was only twenty years ago, and no relationship involving you could ever be anything close to normal. What he meant was that you haven’t been happy in years, Charles. Content, definitely complacent, but true happiness has always seemed to elude you, and maybe if you stopped pretending to be everything you’re not for five minutes you could actually relax.. Charles knows Tony has a point, his moments of happiness in the past few years had been both fleeting and diminishing. But that had been from stress and a certain inexplicable loneliness, not out of some desperate need for Erik.

Right then, thank you anyway. The next time we talk it will likely be by the phone, and don’t you dare complain to me about the bill. Charles says the light part lightly and bordering on cheeky, wanting Tony to understand that he’s not angry at him, not really, just the situation and the seeming inescapability of it. Charles, I am sorry about not being able to help you. Trust me, if I could,

I know, now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go back to being an international crisis. Charles slips out of Tony’s mind before the other man can respond, knowing it would’ve only taken one more flippant comment or pseudo-lecture by Tony to make him snap. Charles couldn’t afford to be mad at Tony right now, not when he’s the only connection Charles has to his old life. Charles comes back to his own body slowly, the buzz of thoughts weakening until it's only Genoshans again.

Charles absently notes that he’s sweating a bit, hair matted against his forehead and throat dry and legs feeling like they might give out on him any second. He’s not sure he should try that again, at least not without more preparation. Charles takes a few deeps breath and does his best to steady himself, giving the mirror his most charming smile before he slips out of the bathroom.

Erik is standing a few feet away, grin nearly feral as he stares at Charles, gaze raw and dangerous, and utterly intoxicating. The last thought makes Charles flush, and he smiles weakly at Erik and wonders how long he’s been in the bathroom, if he needs to come up with some sort of explanation. Charles hasn’t thought of anything that isn’t utterly humiliating by the time Erik bridges the gap between them, running his thumb across Charles’ bottom lip. The touch is as rough and possessive as his gaze, the air filling with a sudden tension. “How is Tony, Charles?”

OMG! OMG!!! OMG!!!!!! This is soooooo intense! On the one hand, I can totally understand Charles' desperation and his need to contact an outside friend. On the other hand, Erik has been clearly trying to go against his agressive nature by being patient and tender to Charles, so he must feel incredibly betrayed by Charles' actions. Also, the fact that his sub is contacting an unrelated switch for help and support must be pretty damn jealousy inducing. Still, how Erik handles this moment can be the make or break point...Aaaccckkk!!!! Can't wait :D

Oh man, I hope Erik handles this well. He's been awesome so far but if he gets too harsh at this point I think it's going to destroy any progress he's made with Charles. Find the place between rage and serenity, Erik! It's called making out!

damn it, but this is so good

I am so excited to see the interaction between Raven, Charles and Erik now that Charles is actively using his telepathy again. And I'd love to see how Erik will react when he realizes that it was Raven - the girl who became a symbol of Mutant pride - who made Charles suppress his powers; that it was his own sister who called his telepathy wrong. Of course, this doesn't even touch the fact that Raven forced Charles to stay out of her head because she wanted some privacy, but got angry at him when he decided that everyone else in the world deserved their privacy too; or that she must have noticed in the past decade that her brother had chronic nausea and painful headaches from trying to block one of his fundamental senses, and yet she never did anything to help.

(As you may have guessed, I am not a fan of *this* Raven and am very much hoping for a confrontation that addresses how much her attitude influenced Charles in his choice to repress himself.)

I completely love this fic and badly want to see where it goes from here. As it has been a month though I'm worrying about whether you are going to continue or not. Please say you will!!
