FILL: The Better Men (19l/30ish)
(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 04:10 am (UTC)(link)No. Erik took a slow, slow breath, in and out. No. I can be the better man, for once.
He had not, he realized, heard any sounds of motion from the other side of the door. Was Charles just standing there? He had a sudden mental image of Charles weeping quietly by the fire, too drunk to understand why he was being rejected, and rushed out of the room.
Charles was by the fire. Curled up on the sofa, fast asleep.
Erik watched him for a minute, the slow rise and fall of his bare chest, the careless wisp of hair across his cheek. He brushed it back, let his fingers linger against warm skin.
Then he pulled one of the blankets off his bed and tucked it around Charles, and bent to kiss his temple before going to bed alone.

Thank you for the delicious angst, the fantastic fusion of this world and for keeping Erik as inherently rebellious.
I love that exchange between Raven and Erik, by the way, that talk about not just One bad breakup, but an accumulation of small hurts that makes both Charles' aloofness and Erik's desperation for a future that could be build up on the *good* things of the past much more precarious and...precious.

It might sound like an impractical ability, but I'm thinking it will help protect me from *major* injuries in battle - like, I'd turn my ankle and fall over, thus avoiding a swing from a blade that would've taken off my head. Or I could trip and collide with villains, knocking them off a cliff.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 08:11 am (UTC)(link)Raven and Erik's conversation reminds us just how much Erik's hopes are built on a history of hurting Charles, not solely one major event. It makes clear the fragility of what they have, and any subsequent interaction more poignant. Erik can't call upon memories of himself as an idyllic boyfriend to persuade Charles to take him back, because he wasn't. I'm so glad they had it. Not just to remind us of the fragility and tenuousness, but to begin to clear the air between Erik and Raven.
I felt so sad and sorry for poor drunken Charles here (once I stopped leering at his costume). He's trying so hard to do the right thing in all ways. He wants Erik but Erik has spent a lifetime wounding him so only an idiot wouldn't be cautious. He knows he's longing for a love that the past suggests will be bad for him and between that and his perfectly understandable self-protection and reservations, he's being torn up. I wanted to tuck a blanket around him too!
I love the richness of this. So many wonderful details. It feels like Hogwarts.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 05:12 am (UTC)(link)thank you so much for the letter warning! The curiosity has been intense and that allowed me to have a moment of disappointment then actually concentrate on the story!
Oh good, that's exactly what I was going for. I know people are desperately curious so I didn't anyone to feel like I was leading them on. :)
