Hmm, I would argue that Charles has been standing up to Erik and calling him on his bullshit all the way through. I had this discussion with my friend the other day. Charles has always been willing to fight Erik when it matters enough - for example when he very deliberately kicks Erik in his injured leg in Part Three - but it might seem like he doesn't follow through because Erik has always bailed on their arguments before, leaving them unfinished, and in fact does so again here. It's not so much that Charles chickens out as that Erik does.

I didn't see it as Erik asking for praise myself, but I know your view on him is different, and that's fine :) More that he's trying to demonstrate to Charles that despite his personal feelings about humans he has been trying, and Charles is accusing him of following through on them when in fact he's been doing quite the opposite. So far he hasn't done anything anti-human other than take over the country (chronologically) and step in when mutants were being murdered and brutalised in South America. He's really trying hard to be a good person, and fair, and gets no thanks for it from the humans.

Maybe this isn't the place for this, but I must say that's a hell of a way to dismiss launching a war which would have killed thousands of people at minimum and disenfranchised all of them. He also doesn't just step in to south america to save mutants, he uses what the govt of one country does as an excuse to take over yet another continent.

Are humans really expected to be grateful supplicants to their superior overlords?

I apologise if this seemed dismissive - this was part of a longer ongoing conversation by comment and email between me and Nekosmuse, which as a result skimmed over a lot of things we had discussed previously, which may lead to it seeming light to an outside reader.

It was more a commentary on Erik's POV than on the actual events of the story - my answer was intended to be from inside Erik's headspace rather than objective. So perhaps to modify it I should say "Erik sees himself as not having done anything anti-human and as taking logical steps to protect mutants." Not that what he does is moral or laudable. It is logical that this is what he would do, given his mindset and stance on these issues - that mutant life is inherently more valuable. He doesn't really think about the human perspective here, instead he is feeling victimised for doing what he sees as the right thing.

I didn't intend for it to be read as my opinion on his actions' morality, and I'm sorry if it comes off that way.
