Charles and Erik are forced together as young teens (as young as 12/14). They are taught to fight/kill in a facility with plenty of other mutant kids.
Charles turns out to be a natural with knives and acrobatic kickboxing - his telepathy gives him a great advantage over his opponent in hand-to-hand. Erik is a wizard with guns and projectiles. Charles is super protective of Erik when they get in close quarters, while Erik routinely has to talk Charles down from leaving bloody corpses in their wake, because "killing people randomly is bad, Charles, I know we can kill people, but killing people is still wrong. No, put the knife down. We don't kill people like that. Yes, I know he's a mean bastard, put the verdammt knife down."
Oh, and they are also clones, possibly along with the other kids at the facility. They run into the originals (rescue/escape scenario). Cue everybody freaking out at the knife-nut teen!Charlie and peacemaker!Erik.
Bonus $1: clone!Erik is older than clone!Charles (by, say, two years). clone!Charles flips the fuck out when someone tries to think about bullying clone!Erik.
Bonus $2: clone!Erik's English is so-so. He communicates with clone!Charles via telepathy and with the rest of the world via clone!Charles.
(shameful Bonus $3: clone!Erik tenderly washing blood off clone!Charles' face.)
Bonus $100: the cloning works through ~~mutant magic~~, and the clones wake at about eleven or thirteen, with a full set of memories the original had at that age, so it eventually turns out original Charles had plenty of mindfuckery done to him up to that point in life (merry abusive childhood and all), before some magical experience taught him to be friendly to all living things. Erik, despite the war going on, was a sweet, shy mama's boy.
The clones can be sweet on each other, or it could be gen, the originals could be either involved or USTing, this can be a no divorce AU or a fix-it.
tl;dr the universe thinks Charles and Erik can only be communicated with by means of giant hammers hitting them on the head. It therefore provides clones of their past selves, who are polar opposites of their future selves, to show them a) they are not that different, b) they can compromise.
