Re: FILL: Everyday Love in Stockholm 147/?
(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 12:24 am (UTC)(link)Also, as much as I would love to say that I'm glad to see this come to some kind of resolution, I think we all know better. Or at least we should all know that I'm immensely paranoid of this situation (because I am). I can understand Erik's logic of not wanting to hear it but, at the same time, I obscenely sympathize with his need to hear it. Good gracious with these two and their stubborn ideals!
I do think Charles doesn't give him enough credit in terms of running the country. I think at this exact moment, I've noticed a chance in Erik's politics that I hadn't realized before. Of course, Charles wouldn't be Charles without his flaws, but, per usual, his flaws absolutely ruin me. I've always thought that I understood Erik's side more than Charles', but that's because I'm a touch cynical. At least from where I'm standing, he's still clinging to this idea of a perfect or near-perfect society. It's not like the humans are cutting Erik much slack.
Of course, it'd be loaded with preposterone if we thought that Charles would change his ways. And I like to think it's for the best that he doesn't because he's working Erik away from the edge of the extreme. But, at the same time, c'moooon Charles. Do you really think humanity is just waiting for an opening to prove that they're okay with everything? It isn't even just about species preservation anymore, it's downright entitlement. With the shift in Magneto's politics, they could certainly have a better lifestyle (perhaps even better than the one they had under the previous human government) but they're the ones not allowing themselves the chance.
I don't know, it just grates on me the way it does when people hate the government but don't consider all the difficulties presented in running an entire nation. Which is why I adored Erik's point that it's not like either of them have done this before. And he is trying, and changing, which I think is more than Charles can say. Not that I don't understand, I do, it's just...you're both ridiculous!
Anyway, done rambling. Excellent update as always, darling.

Re: FILL: Everyday Love in Stockholm 147/?
It was a really hard write, this update, because this was the argument that just would not end. I kept going and going and thinking 'where am I going with this?' and knowing where I wanted to end up but they just kep arguing, and... I'm really pleased with how it turned out, though, and I'm pleased it worked for you.
One of the interesting things with this fic is the different reader opinions regarding who is more right and who is more wrong. Personally, I agree with you - Charles doesn't give Erik enough credit, and nor do the humans. He might not like them but he isn't persecuting them, which for him is a big step. And he hasn't got a lot of room to manoeuvre. It does make for some great arguments, though, and a lot of tension, so I can't complain! Erik has a tough job and he's trying to do a good one, but people make that difficult. Charles is going to have to come around to realise that Erik is trying to be a good person.
