Charles/Erik -- Charles is a bakery owner whose most frequent customer is Erik.

Charles started off the morning the same way he always did...

FILL: The Better Men (23e/24)

For a minute the only sound in Cerebro was Erik's labored breathing. The shield hung shimmering before him for a moment, then faded away.

He took a few heavy, painful steps and stood over Shaw's spread-eagle body, wand at the ready. But the man's eyes were unmistakably empty, a neat round hole between them, a pool of blood and... messier things... slowly spreading beneath his head. The blackthorn wand hummed happily in Erik's hand.

Dolly's quiet sobs drew Erik's eye; she was huddled at the foot of the altar, teary and shocked, wrapping a piece of her torn costume around the wound in her arm.

Charles was still perfectly still.

Erik's leg gave out completely just as he reached Charles; he half-knelt-half-fell at his side, gathered him up – "Charles, Charles, please, Charles—"

A wave of light-headed relief nearly took him to the floor when Charles's eyes fluttered open, breath coming out in a choked pain-noise followed by "Erik?"

Erik crushed him to his chest, couldn't pull back even far enough to kiss him, contented himself with pressing hard, half-formed kisses into the side of his neck while Charles twined his arms weakly around him.

"Dolly – is Dolly—"

"She's fine. She's alive, anyway," Erik said. "And I'm…" He huffed a slightly hysterical laugh glancing down at his solid-red trouser leg. "I'm very possibly bleeding out. We should get out of here. Come on." He tried to help Charles to his feet.

Nothing happened.

"Charles?"

"I... I can't," Charles said. "I can't feel my legs. I can't feel my legs."

Erik tried to pick him up, and that turned out to be the very last thing his gunshot wound could tolerate. He collapsed, half on top of Charles, head spinning and dark clouds swirling over his vision. He wasn't sure if he was hearing noises, loud crashing noises like someone trying to break through Cerebro's walls, or if it was his ears ringing. His ears were ringing and he couldn't see.

"Charles," he said, because that was the only important thing. "Charles."

He could still make out Charles's face, barely, eyes wide and frightened.

And then he couldn't anymore.

AJFSDKLJSJDKGLHADAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH! That was so awesome and also terrifying!!!!!!!!

I'm interested that you chose to keep Charles's paralysis in this AU - I was actually expecting Shaw's spell to just not work at all since he'd cast that protection on Charles. But I guess it doesn't quite cover a direct hit.

I'm also very curious about how one manages paraplegia in the wizarding world. We know that they can't just regrow lost appendages (Mad Eye Moony) so I doubt they could heal a damaged spinal cord, but it would be interesting to figure out how to balance day-to-day mobility and body care issues between magic and muggle approaches. If this is going to end at 24 parts I'm guessing you won't go into much detail about it here, but I still find it an interesting consideration. Has anyone asked JKR about this?

Anyway, getting back to the actual update, haha, take that, Shaw! You're dead! Shot with your own bullet! How d'ya like them apples, huh? Probably not very much! Because you're dead! Ha!

Erik has his wand back again! This makes me very happy. And it also makes me very happy that Dolly Dursley didn't die (and that Erik wasn't willing to sacrifice her, not that I expected him to). But I was extremely pleased that she got to know that.

I want to see Erik's Slytherins bringing him cards and get-well presents in the hospital wing (or at Saint Mungo's). Especially Scorpius! He can bring stuff to Charles, too. And holy cow, I just realized this makes Charles the new headmaster of Hogwarts! Go him!

Now he and Erik just need to be uninterrupted long enough to go from starting to make out to sexytiems. And live happily ever after. Or else. (That was intended as more of a threat towards their universe than towards you, the author.) You just get lots of praise and sparkly hearts thrown in the air. And one other thing--

In honor of this new part, I have posted a picture of the QBAD (Quit Being A Dick) bracelet that I made for Erik. Check it out here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/76596721@N02/6874061367/in/photostream).

The blue and green beads represent Erik and Charles's house colors as well as their eyes (aww!). Slytherin silver is there in the metallic cord, and there's a teensy bit of Ravenclaw bronze in the beads near the letters. The red and purple that accompany them are, of course, a tribute to Magneto's taste in color schemes. [I put waaay too much thought into this, I know.]

Now Erik can glance down at his wrist and remind himself of who he wants to intertwine his life with - and what the best strategy is for ensuring that outcome: Quit Being A Dick.

Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you that I loved the call-back you did to the first X-Men movie, with the scene between Rogue and Magneto (and also that bit with Logan). Did you hear that sound just now, Magneto? That was you getting burned.

I'm so glad someone commented on the X-Men movie call-back! I thought the parallel was just too perfect to pass up. I didn't even design it that way, it just was.

The bracelet is soooo awesomeeee. I've already posted on my tumblr about it. MUST REMEMBER to point it out in the notes when I post the next chapter. Feel free to remind me, if I drop the ball.

I was actually expecting Shaw's spell to just not work at all since he'd cast that protection on Charles. But I guess it doesn't quite cover a direct hit.
That protection is actually the only reason he survived at all. Shaw did say it wasn't guaranteed. As you say -- couldn't quite cover a direct hit. (Trivia question, since I might or might not be able to work this into the last chapter -- guess where Charles's lotus is?)

If this is going to end at 24 parts I'm guessing you won't go into much detail about it here, but I still find it an interesting consideration
Actually I do plan on going into it a little. Last chapter is going to be fairly long, in fact. Might end up being two chapters but I'm trying not to let it get out of control, lol.

Ooh! It's at the small of his back! (Okay, I should not sound so happy about a spinal cord injury, but I was excited that I figured it out.)

Correct! Which I bring attention to only because I find it a strangely intriguing mental image and therefore needed to share. :)

And now back to work on ze writing...

*flails madly* Oh my God! You handle this action and tension so well, I got super involved in everything that happened. It's really cinematic. Poor Charles ;o;
