Charles is sick. He and Erik have known for months. He was in remission for a while, his hair was growing back, not quite as long as before but getting there, and then they find out that his cancer is back, and it's inoperable this time. Charles refuses to go through treatment again, despite Erik's pleading.
Eventually, they are told that Charles has six months to live, plenty of time to get things in order, though the deadline does make things a bit more finite for them. Three weeks later, Charles is having a rough night, can't sleep, and can barely be coaxed into lying down with Erik. The two of them drift off holding one another, Erik staying awake longer and sleeping only fitfully. When he wakes, it is to find Charles curled up close against his chest, but lying far too still. Erik calls his name, shakes him gently, even though he knows Charles is gone.
Raven comes over later, concerned at the lack of response when she calls, and finds Erik still wrapped around Charles, looking absolutely shattered and unwilling to let him go. She has to call 911, pry Erik away from her brother, and deal with her own grief at the same time. Once Erik's unresponsiveness breaks, he's a mess, and though she tries to help him, he's inconsolable.
I would like the focus to be on Erik's thoughts and feelings, especially with Charles taken from him so much sooner than he expected, and details of life before, when Charles and Erik were still happy and not burdened by the sickness or the time constraint on their relationship. Break my heart.
