Enter Erik, part of Shaw's inner circle because he subscribes to Shaw's ideals, but who actually hates the man himself. He comes across Charles alone--either because Charles is ill and so was sent away lest he make Shaw sick, or because he's bandaging himself after a particularly rough session with Shaw--and they start getting to know each other. Erik finds him easy to talk to and quite intelligent, as their chess games prove, and Erik falls in love with him.
