Basically, during the reign of Emperor Shaw, Charles is a slave and Erik is a gladiator. They meet, fall in love and have beautiful, angsty sex. Then Charles' owner (whichever character, don't mind), sells him to a brothel after finding out. A few years later, Charles catches Shaw's eye, and becomes his 'whatever the male term for mistress is'. Shaw tortures and abuses Charles, always asking whether Charles is afraid of him, to which he replies no. Meanwhile, Shaw also has a slight obsession with Erik, and keeps coming up with more creative ways to get him killed (eg. fighting one handed, fighting on his own while outnumbered or against a group of women) until Erik finally escapes. The boys eventually find each other again and Erik is horrified. They eventually come up with a plan to kill Shaw with the help of a few others (friends, his Empress, whatever other Xmen characters you want to work in). A big part of the book is the main character Thea (Charles) cutting herself as penance for surviving the massacre of Masada, which gets worse under the torture, sometimes even doing it to actually kill herself, so if you want to work that in you can.
