Date: 2012-01-15 06:27 am (UTC)“Do you actually have a list? Or was Raven just trying to get rid of us?”
Darwin laughed “both.” He picked up a list on the kitchen counter that looked as though it had been updated by almost everyone in the house. Some of the items had been crossed off, but far more remained.
“Darwin, can you give me your honest opinion on something?” Charlotte asked as she stared at the list.
“Yeah,” he replied eyebrow raised.
Charlotte shifted almost nervously, “Do you think that my living so far away is going to cause problems in the future?”
Darwin looked a little uncertain, but promptly answered, “yes. I think so if you want to be involved in building this place. We’ve gotten very close, all of us, and you almost seem like an interloper, especially to those who met Raven and I first, Alex and Angel. We’ve been using our mutations as much as possible, well, except for Alex. It’s changed things. I’m not in any position to say what you should do with your life, but I don’t think you’ll be able to do this the way you have been.”
“Right, thanks,” Charlotte sighed. Darwin didn’t seem done though, clearly this was something he’d been thinking about a lot in the past few weeks.
“I’m a black man.” Charlotte hummed in agreement. “At least according to the rest of the world. Alex is white and Angel is also colored. But I don’t know how to classify myself against Raven. Alex doesn’t know how to think of someone who can turn themselves into a man. We need a different system for ourselves, and that’s what we have, what we’re developing in this mansion, and without you here you aren’t included. Outside of this place a white woman would never ask a black man for advice.”
“You forget how intelligent I know you are.”
“That is exactly my point, Miss Telepath.”
