Round 6, Charles/Erik
Date: 2012-01-12 07:18 pm (UTC)Charles is sick. He and Erik have known for months. He was in remission for a while, his hair was growing back, not quite as long as before but getting there, and then they find out that his cancer is back, and it's inoperable this time. Charles refuses to go through treatment again, despite Erik's pleading.
Eventually, they are told that Charles has six months to live, plenty of time to get things in order, though the deadline does make things a bit more finite for them. Three weeks later, Charles is having a rough night, can't sleep, and can barely be coaxed into lying down with Erik. The two of them drift off holding one another, Erik staying awake longer and sleeping only fitfully. When he wakes, it is to find Charles curled up close against his chest, but lying far too still. Erik calls his name, shakes him gently, even though he knows Charles is gone.
Raven comes over later, concerned at the lack of response when she calls, and finds Erik still wrapped around Charles, looking absolutely shattered and unwilling to let him go. She has to call 911, pry Erik away from her brother, and deal with her own grief at the same time. Once Erik's unresponsiveness breaks, he's a mess, and though she tries to help him, he's inconsolable.
I would like the focus to be on Erik's thoughts and feelings, especially with Charles taken from him so much sooner than he expected, and details of life before, when Charles and Erik were still happy and not burdened by the sickness or the time constraint on their relationship. Break my heart.

So one day Erik and Charles are having one of their ~discussions~ during a chess match or whenever, but this time it's getting a bit more heated than usual for whatever reason. Erik (and Raven has in the past maybe?) is saying stuff like Charles has never been discriminated against/doesn't have to hide his true self, not like Raven, stuff like that. And without thinking because he's angry Charles busts out with something like "OMG I'M GAY AND ALL THE TIME I CAN HEAR ALL THE NASTY HORRIBLE STUFF PEOPLE THINK ABOUT HOMOSEXUALS AND I HIDE MYSELF WHENEVER I FLIRT WITH GIRLS" or... something along those lines.
And I don't want it to be a PWP and Erik is all 'me too! *sexes*' I want Erik to have no clue, and probably have internalized a lot of the stereotypes about gay people that society believed/believes, etc. (There's not enough of that in fic so far, c'mon people, it was the 60s.)
Mostly I want an exploration of what it would have been like for a gay telepath in the 60s, and Erik realizing that Charles DOES understand, at least to some degree... and then struggling with his own sexuality. And this all happening slowly over chessboard!talks/arguments and whatnot.
You could totally also include his step brother's/step father's abuse/neglect (could tie that into them thinking he was gay or even just because he wasn't ~manly~ idk).
Bonus points if Charles freaks out after coming out to Erik, and Erik is a little off balance because he did NOT see that coming and so not reassuring Charles right away and so... Charles!angst. This was also probably his first coming out. It would make sense for Raven not to know since that's why she thinks Charles doesn't understand.
More bonus points if at some point Charles in the discussions says something along the lines of "and I'm well aware that if I lived in Germany I would've been sent to the camps too because of this" and all the metal in the house starts rattling as Erik is furious at the idea of (his) Charles anywhere near the camps.
More bonus points if the reason the argument was more heated than normal because Charles was upset about something specific, like one of the kids saying something really homophobic or something horrible in the news, etc.
tl;dr- exploration of what being a gay telepath during the 60s would have been like, and erik and raven's reactions to finding that out.

(1) Shaw kicks Erik's ass and is like, mm, pretty omega. Waits until Charles is in heat. Makes Erik watch Charles try so hard not to want Shaw. Which doesn't work --> Shaw is brutal and Charles loves it until it's over. Shaw goes, if you'll willingly be mine, I won't execute Erik. Charles rescues Erik from the animal shelter / the street and takes him home. Many man-and-his-dog adventures ensue. The dog in Erik wants to investigate every interesting smell, while the human part of him is mortified by the whole poop and scoop thing. Charles is a bit bemused by the attentiveness his new pet shows when he undresses or steps out of the bathroom fresh from a shower. His new doggy friend also seems very averse to visiting the vet.
Bonuses:

Erik is fiercely devoted to a cause that's, at base, about protecting the oppressed. He has a temper, he's righteously uncompromising, unflinchingly brave, and he goes haring off recklessly into situations he can't always handle without thinking about the consequences. (First time raising that submarine, anyone?) All Gryffindor strengths/flaws, depending on how far you take them.
Charles is charming, wealthy, and he can get into your head. He toes the political line, takes the long view, and (comics!Charles especially) plays the loooong manipulative con to make things work out the way he wants. He'd be the nicest Slytherin ever - which is exactly why no one sees him coming.

So on the eve of the wedding, Shaw has his men grab Charles and bring him back to the Hellfire lair where he has Charles stripped naked so he can take a look at him. Declaring that this son of an ape is indeed uncommonly pretty, Shaw mockingly announces (to the cheers of his gang) that maybe Erik is onto something and decides he's going to marry Charles himself. So they tear down a curtain and put it on Charles as a veil, set up a make-shift altar, and Shaw has Azazel preside over their wedding. Whenever Charles tries to plead or protest, everyone just shouts him down and pretends they don't understand human gibberish.
Instead of a wedding ring, Shaw uses a cock ring. And for their honeymoon, Shaw just bends Charles over the altar and fucks him before the congregation while they egg him on. As soon as he pulls up his pants, he tells Charles to be a good wife and start serving drinks to his gang, so the gang gleefully gives Charles a frilly little half-apron, some white lacey thigh-highs, and heels to limp around in with his serving tray.
